Making some guesses/assumptions about how those values are calculated....

Distance traveled is based on the distance between spot points. If Matt's spot was not working for a period of time, or if he had turned it off - fewer points, particulary in a twisty section, would have him travelling fewer miles than actual. With spot values coming in at best 10 min intervals, reported mileage is going to be considerably less than actual for everyone.

Imagine a zigzag pattern. This distance between the beginning and end of it is much less than the distance along the path of the zigzag.
