Final thoughts from Erik Lobeck: Giardia confirmed!

You are missing some Flash content that should appear here! Perhaps your browser cannot display it, or maybe it did not initialize correctly.

Hi it’s Erik Lobeck with a final I guess closure update. I am calling from my hospital at home where it has been confirmed that I have contracted giardia somewhere along this wet moist rout this year.  Some stray droplet probably.  In any event it is good I stopped when I did because things kind of spiraled downwards the next few days and I wasn’t able to hold down any food or water until today which is Monday and that is only with an IV in my arm.   Ya so sidelined by Giardia is the final story and that’s it.  I guess, Obviously I wish I could have finished it but it was prudent to stop when I did and I feel good about that decision.  And I Congratulate everyone who makes it through and congratulations to Leighton White my hometown compatriot for finishing that event despite all his bike problems along the way and Hi to all the group I was riding with on and off sporadically thru the last few days. Ok bye.

Paul calls in from Cuba

Hello! This is Paul who has now defected to Cuba. Well Cuba, New Mexico, anyway. Message for Molly and Benjamin. I've been eating cheese straws for lunch like you get at Burley Pig Grandad's house and they're very tasty. Message for Thomas and Freddie. I went down the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Road today with lots of grass growing down the middle of it but I wish I could fly like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang because it was very, very bumpy and it took a lot of time to get where we are today. So, a quick recap, for the past two days. We set off from Horca and it was very, very rough going, very beautiful (probably the most beautiful bit of the route so far) as we left Colorado and came into New Mexico. Potentilla flowers (bushes) growing wild in meadows very high up at about 11,000', scruboak growing underneath Ponderosa Pine. Very, very pleasant except for the roughness of the riding. It was very difficult going. We only made 40 miles in the first 5.5 hours yesterday. Then we managed to catch up. We actually had a race into Abiquiu because when we got to El Reto, apart from it being a nice Ovando or Atlantic City kind of place, it was completely empty; devoid of all services that might be of any use to Tour Divide riders. So we had to race down to Abiquiu to get there before the inn closed because we were a bit low on provisions and we didn't want to camp but we made it with six minutes to spare thanks to a two mile burst in six miles along the last bit od road. I wish I could keep that pace up in a time trial at home. We made it there but unfortunately another rough day today. Steve has not been well. He was sick last night and this morning so he didn't join us today. I hope it means he can recuperate and push on tomorrow maybe. He said he was going to take a day to think about it. We wish him well. A tough day from Albiquiu but there's great downhill to appreciate. Then, what else? We rode through the Rainbow Gathering. We've had everything. Read more »

Trevor calls in from Cuba

Hello, this is Trevor Browne calling from Cuba.  We arrived kinda evening-ish. Had a nice big bacon cheeseburger with extra cheese and bacon just to fill us up.  Been a really hard past 2 days in New Mexic.o Probably the hardest for me anyways, for the whole tour. Roads are really super bumpy, muddy, trashed, full of lava. Anything you can think of has been thrown on the trail for us, but we've got through. Weather has been kind of off and on as well. We've gone through 3 thunder and lightening storms with hail today.  Yesterday, another thunderstorm. We also encountered New Mexico mud which is not so pleasant up on Bell Grande.  It's almost up there with Lima mud, but we made it through.  We met up with the Rainbow tribe today which os pretty interesting.  We are fitting in with our nice long beards now, so didn't look too out of place.  Smelled just about the same as everyone else.  Other than that, we're headed up to Grant tomorrow. I think it's mostly pavement so it should be a bit faster for us.  We lost Stephen back in Abecue, feeling quite sick to his stomach. Hopefully he gets better.  He's taking a day of rest there, but we had to head on. Maybe in the future he will join up with us.  Wish him the best, hope he gets well soon.  Looks like this might be our last week  Maybe in the next four or five days we'll be done.  Looking forward to not wearing biking shorts anymore, and biking shoes and to wearing normal clothes for once.  This is Trevor Browne signing out from Cuba. I hope everyone is well, and I'll talk to you soon.  Bye.
