Race Report: Into Day 11

Racer update about:

The weather has continued to torment racers and make for ride-ending conditions.  Since our last update, we have had seven racers drop-out, one announce his intention to cease racing and continue touring, and one disqualify himself.  The scratch list so far includes:

  1. Kevin Hall
  2. Cadet pulls out with a bad knee!
  3. Bruce Giroux (Disqualified himself after missing a section in the Flathead addition but intends to continue)
  4. Matt Thourot
  5. Jeff Kerby
  6. John Nobile
  7. Kevin Dean
  8. Steve McGuire
  9. Josh Ficke
  10. Jeff Naylor
  11. Justin Kline (intends to continue touring the route)
  12. Martin Rendl (Disqualified himself after skipping a section between Lincoln and Helena but intends to continue)

Of the original field of 42, only 30 racers remain.  While the attrition rate is not abnormally high for this stage of the race, we are noticing the weather is finally cracking the racers.  Racers have had to endure 50 mile-per-hour winds, hail and torrential rains through the Basin which will likely cause more drop-outs.

Steamboat Springs, CO Weather 2009As of Rawlins, WY, Matt Lee was only 2:40 behind record pace.  Considering the daily storms he has had to endure thus far, this is an impressive pace to keep.  Luckily for Matt and the other race leaders, it appears they will be seeing a break in the storms as they head into the Steamboat Springs, CO.  With the break in the storms, it would not be surprising to see Matt to jump back ahead of record pace.

The Chase

Since nearly closing the gap in Lima, the chase group has lost some ground.  As of Rawlins, Matt's lead over Chris Plesko and Kurt Refsnider has grown to 17 hours.  That said, the hourly total is slightly misleading: presently they are less than 40 miles behind Matt.  As previously predicted, Jay and Tracey Petervary made up a significant amount of ground in the Basin and are merely 1:40 behind Chris and Kurt.  Given how close these racers are to each other, it would not take much of a slip for anyone to gain, or keep, the lead.

Race Media

Over the weekend, a number of fans were able to get out on the route and take photos.  Jay and Tracey have had a number of photos uploaded to their website.  Additionally, James Perdue snapped a bunch of pictures of racer's coming through the Centennial Valley (see page 2).  Finally, Andy Buchanan emailed in a set of photos from when he met up with Racers around Lima, MT, which I've attached below.

Thanks for all your work

You guys are the freakin' bomb (as my 9 yr old would say). The race coverage is so motivating. Your dedication to this race and website are amazing. Can't say enough good things about your work.

I'm having more fun reading (and listening) to this race than I do the "Tours" over in Europe. I'm so geeked out that I have the GDMBR maps spread out all over the kitchen table so I can "see" whats going on. I just wish that I had ridden the route already so that I could visualize what they are going through.

Thanks for making me a TD geekaholic! My wife and kids send their regards.

TD Geekaholic #2

Just wanted to say there are some random fans like me out here:not connected at all to any of the riders, but obsessively logging on to watch the leaderboard, listen to the call-ins and follow the race. I found out about the race through Jill's blog and have loved reading about the gruesome conditions, the characters in the race, the Italian roadie scandals (reported by the always rules-conscious Brits), the sprained ankles, deep mud, big hail, cold and hard winds, crazy Montanans on the trail, grizzly sightings, stoned sounding Canadians, tandem-onium, the nutso (read: badass) epileptic gal on a fixie (what's a little seizure on a mad race like this while camping and riding/hike-a-biking dozens of miles a day?), the mad Plesko on a single speed, and Matt Lee rocking the front of the pack.. for how long we don't know!
The golf US Open, March Madness and other sporting events pale in comparison.
So, keep up the updates and commentary, the loyal fans demand news!!!
Ride hard, we are silently cheering every day out here.

Thanks for all your work #2

As an Aussie following this, all I can say is a big thanks from the other side of the world for all the hard work everyone has been putting in to bring us updates from along the route. It's been great. I can only imagine what a slog the racers are going through but it's truly amazing to hear their exploits.

Every morning I get to work and one of the first things I check is how the racers are going. They certainly have my respect!

italian roadie scandal??...stop please...

Please stop with this comment, there was been an error and all thing are solved now!!
The Italian are racing like others and stop with bad comments and insinuations.
Think about this wonderfull competition and the grand effort of all racers.
thank you all people that organize and update this web site...wonderfull work!!

the news update

Dween's post of TD Geekaholic #2 made me laugh soooo hard! I feel like you summed up everything really well! My husband was describing to someone how the TD has consumed our lives for the past 11 days. It is like a reality tv show where you become connected to the characters with their ups, downs, and when they decide to quit you become really sad... I mean one of the main characters got voted off the show(but the executives didn't decide, the individual did) so when you read that so and so "pulled the plug or threw in the towel", your not sure whether you can listen to the call-in of the sad rider who just endured awful conditions and had to make the decision. I obviously have my favorite character the "badass epileptic girl on a fixie" who wants to be the first person to complete the divide on a fixie...yes, I want her more than anyone else to be one of the riders who crosses the finish line in Mexico.

Thanks to those who are following this and giving their support and encouragement to my sister!

every person in this epic is amazing -there's enough drama with bears, mud, safety, and dental floss. WoW - and we love our uncle Jamie. NM is welcoming all of you!
