Rudiger Muller Scratches

Racer update about:

Having arrived in Atlantic City on Wednesday June 24th at noon I was unable to continue the race due to illness, probably caused by dehydration. The next day I still felt very weak and exhausted, so I abandoned part of my kit, pedaled extremely slowly to the next town named Landers, gave away my bike, hitched a ride to Riverton, took a plane to Denver and left the U.S. Now I'm at home in Hamburg again and will see the doctor on Monday to cure several problems.

Kurt calls in from Milan

Hey, Kurt here. I am in Milan, right outside Grants. Couldn't quite make it past the Dairy Queen into Grants, Dairy Queen just looked too good. The ride here was a challenge, to say the least. Took me a few hours to get down this morning from where I camped last night, up above Abiquiu, through the Rainbow Gathering. They were all asleep still, so that was kind of amusing to see. There were a ton of cars, but nobody to be seen anywhere, almost. Got a little food in Abiquiu, and headed off for the 125 miles of pavement, or 120, or whatever it is. Had a tailwind for a little bit, then a headwind for a while, then for the last 60 miles I was in a large storm the entire time with a headwind until the very end. It just was pounding everything. I actually managed to stay fairly dry with my rain gear on, amazingly. Everything around town, to say the least, is flooded. The fields are flooded, I was crossing rivers that were flowing across the road that were as deep as my knee in places. A lot of water came down out of that, so I'm curious to see what the route down toward pie town is going to be like.  So I'm going to push on in a little bit here after I get some food and dry off. hopefully things improve a bit, I don't know, we'll see. Alright, later.

Mike calls in from Pinedale, Wyoming

Racer update about:

Michael called in after spending the night camping at Union Pass at an altitude of about 9,000 feet.  It was brutally cold and he's hit a bit of a brick wall so he's going to get some rest in Pinedale, Wyoming.  Knees are sore, but he should be out of Wyoming in a few days.

You can hear Mike's call here

We're rooting for you Mike!

Hello, this is Tracey calling in from Cuba, and JayP, and a yeah, we had a really good morning…really good night, really good morning, and did lots of climbing, and the downhill…got all that section coming off that pass from…where were we yesterday…forget the name of the town where we were…oh, Abiquiu. Yeah all that area up there was really cool, slept good, there was a nice camping area up there to sleep and then woke up early and finished up the pass and then uh, holy rainbow gathering…that was pretty wicked. There was like hundreds and hundreds of rainbow people and patchouli and dreads and all that kind of stuff going on. I think I got cut off but uh, we’re in Cuba, we’re gonna head out to Grants, seems like there is a 140 miles of roads so Jay and I are hopefully going to rock that and keep it moving forward. The food…I guess it kind of hard for Jay, he keeps eating and eating and eating and is getting skinnier. So um, that’s going on for him, I am doing fine, yeah, uh, it’s been fun, so uh, just moving forward, heading to the border, and thinking about everybody who has been supporting us and watching us and we definitely thank you for all that and appreciate all that. So, I don’t know, I guess that is it for now and we’ll talk to you soon.

Hey, this is Chris Plesko, calling in from Cuba.  Made it over The Bride this morning.  Headed up a little bit last night from Abiquiu.  That's a good section... just keeps coming at you, it takes longer than you think.  Anyway, getting ready to head out on the alternates and pay my dues as a single speeder.  And probably, unfortunately, leave Jay and Tracey because they are going to leave my spun-out-ass behind.  Yeah any other words for the morning?  Uhh, Rainbow gathering...wow... that was some very interesting stuff this morning.  So, yeah, that's all.  Next stop will be Grants.  I gotta get there.  So... later.

TF Replays to Day 16

Racer update about:

Apologies for the lack of videos lately -- I spent four days bikepacking singletrack here in Northern AZ. It was hard to not think of all the TD racers while out there, eating from gas stations, camping trailside and generally focusing on human powered motion.

Here are the last few days for the top 10. Kurt and Chris split and Matt continues pushing his lead into New Mexico. From the videos it seems that most racers are keeping the same schedule as far as sleep goes. We may see this change as the Mexican border comes into view. With that and the heat I will be surprised if we don't see some nighttime pushes. We'll see.

And, all racers, from the beginning, super fast! Watch as the racers spread out and also thin out. If you look close you'll see red dots disappearing... Read more »
