Michael Komp: Arriving in Idaho

Racer update about:

Here is Michael's call-in when he crossed the Montana border into Idaho.  It sounds like Montana had some rough weather - rainy and cold, but there were a lot of mosquitoes to keep him company so he wouldn't get too lonely.

We should be all caught up with Michael's early posts now.

Go Mike!!

Hi this is Per Nilsson Eklof currently in Pinedale Wyoming, had three pretty good days...120, 110 and 100 miles. I've been riding with Steve, Trevor and Paul which has been good. Had some issues with my right knee which has been pretty painful the last couple of days, I've been loading up on ibruprofen and just hoping to make it through for a while and see if it gets any better. Today was better than yesterday so it's a good sign at least but it's not great err I think that's about it really, other than that things are quite good so speak soon again Bye

Race Report: Day 14

Racer update about:

The racers are spread from Matthew coming into New Mexico all the way up to Bruce Giroux coming into Idaho.

Matthew called from Del Norte at 10am after stopping at 10pm last night on the way to Carnero Pass. The road up Carnero is a little spooky at night as there are cattle all over and they snort at you and all you see are their eyes in your dim LED headlights – but there’s good primitive camping there amongst tall trees.

Sounds like Matthew had a bit of rain on Carnero and Cochetopa Passes. Then, this afternoon he busted up and over Indiana Pass, the highest pass of the route, which is a grueling 25 mile climb that takes about 4 hours getting pretty steep in places at the same time as washboard and tiny gravel.

He’s now in Platoro, where hit looks like he'll bed down for the night. Read more »

Hey everybody this is Chris Plesko, calling in from Sargents. Had a long morning in Saluda getting my bike into tip top shape. Got a new drive train and a new rear tire and some fresh bearings in a few places, after our mud fest in Montana. Hopefully this is all good to go and will get me to the end. Other than that, got over Marshall Pass, got hammered by storms for ignoring the Colorado rule of being over passes early. At least I am dried out a little now. Going to head on from Sargents. Next stop, is Dell Norte and then the edge of Colorado is getting dangerously close.  I can hardly believe it. Yeah, hope all the other racers are doing really good. Bye!

Birthday Breakfast

Hello everyone, its Jay, and we made it over here to Sargents and the climb over the pass was actually quite nice…good grade for the tandem…not that extra pitch where things get difficult…and uh, yep, just had another lunch of course, and just thought I might express the only things that are tough right now is just keeping up with my food intake. Um, my mouth can’t keep up with it and its hard for me to get out of places…little towns…and pass places that have food because I am very attracted to that. But um, we’re looking to get to Del Norte, so…ride on!

Jill calls in from Rawlins with some repairs done

Hey, it's Jill Homer.  It's noon on Thursday.  I'm still in Rawlins, spent most of the morning here trying to deal with my bike.  The bike shop was marginally helpful -- they helped me clean out my hub, helped me kinda jerry-rig my front brake because the caliper was having problems.  Turns out we had to break a piece of to get the new brake pads in and I only had one spare set.  So I'm hoping that's enough to get me to Steamboat -- as it turns out it's all kinda stuff I could've done by myself rather than wait for the bike mechanic.  I waited for him to show up until about almost 11, but you know, you live and learn.  And lost half a day, but had three huge meals and a nice, long rest.  So in the end, it is probably a good thing.  But I'm really excited to get back on the road and and I'm REALLY excited to leave Rawlins.  And so I'm expecting to be in Steamboat sometime mid-tomorrow, hopefully.  And, uhh, I'll call then!  Talk to you later, bye.
