Race Report: Day 12

Racer update about:

Racers have now spread out over 4 states, and the field has slimmed out even more in since our last update. We've lost Jacob Johnsrud, who called in from Butte to drop and Ray Porter, who rode to Lima fighting the weather and mud and a cold night on Sheep's Creek Divide. After pulling into Lima, Ray decided to box up his bike and go home - only to slice his hand open and cut an artery and get rushed to Dillon and then Butte for hand surgery. We wish him luck with all of that. The race is now down to 28 racers this afternoon. We also lost ITT racer Dave Nice who pulled out Monday night near Steamboat Springs. He had made it 1,133 miles - furthest ever, on a fixie. He posted up on his blog about his drop and we wish him a speedy recovery.

Yesterday the racers perservered storms and cold throughout Montana reporting hail and rain from Fleecer Ridge all the way through the Great Divide Basin in Wyoming.

Monday Night
Monday night Jill Homer made it to Pinedale and is currently ahead of the record female pace as she heads into the basin. The next woman, Cricket Butler, is about 2 days behind her.

Campsite in the Great Divide Basin

Matthew made it to Lynx Pass Monday night, a nice little climb which put him 40 miles or so out of Steamboat. Kurt and Chris stopped a couple of hours earlier on the pass before Steamboat after restocking at the Brush Mountain Lodge, where Kristin is always hospitable to Divide Racers. This put them about 70 miles behind Matthew at the beginning of today. Not too far behind Kurt and Chris was the "Love Shack" tandem with Jay and Tracy staying at the Lodge. Read more »

Hello, it's Paul calling in from...where are we?......Island Park....Mack's Inn kind of place....Sawtell Resort.  We're at the crossing of the Highway... whatever the highway number is.  Anyway, we've done about 85 miles from Lima this morning, it's about half three now so we're making good progress.  we're going to have dinner here and then crack on.  Maybe try and get to the end of the railroad section tonight  or maybe a bit further if we can.  So that's what we're up to.  Good riding now after Lima so you can pass that on to those wo are still coming.  It's all fine.  No Mud.  Everything rideable, this far at least.

Message to Molly, Benjamin, Thomas and Freddie....  I saw a real cowboy today!  But he wasn't shooting at anybody Benjamin so no shooting at the boys in the garden.  But he was herding cows and riding a horse and he was wearing a hat...so a proper cowboy.  I took a picture so you can see him when I get back.

Message for Alan next door.... sorry the Plumpton rockies got the better of you.  I wish you a fast recovery and if I ever recover from finishing this, which I hope to do, then maybe we can have a ride together when I get back once your leg is better.  That's it from Sawtell Resort.  Bye for now.

Thanks again Alex. We’ll be moving along now trouble free. Shout out to Smartwool…they came and seen us as well. Home at Steamboat. They hooked us up with a bunch of product for our ride and they came and visited us while we were at Orange Peel as well. So, coming into Steamboat was great, and getting outta here is just as good, and looking…excited for a great day, and a yeah, just things are going good and feeling good so..enjoy the weather guys, thanks. Hi, this is Alan Goldsmith calling in from Rawlins on Tuesday 23rd, ten to twelve. We're through the Basin! I rode most of it with Canon and Blaine. We've lost Blaine in town but I'm sure we'll find him again! We're going to try and push on to Brush Mountain Lodge, so if you're listening Kirsten get the hot tub hot! It's 85 miles and it's midday, so not sure if we're going to make it, but we'll give it a damn good try!! Really good weather for the Basin, had a screaming tail-wind. Camped out, beautiful night under the stars. Yep. It's going well. After two rough days, two good days. So, life is good again! Right. Bye.

Kurt calls leaving Steamboat

Hey, Kurt here. Chris and I are just heading out of Steamboat. We got in here a couple hours ago and had a bunch of work done on our bikes at Orange Peel and got some tasty breakfast burritos. We're excited to be down in Colorado finally, and heading toward the place where the route comes the closest to where both of us live. So it's pretty exciting to be back kinda close to home. The weather's looking up, it's a little warm, but not too bad. It was a tough day, the headwind took quite a - really steep rollers in southern Wyoming, but made it through. The Brush Creek Lodge made it possible for us to get through the night, at least up to a place on the pass where we slept. Got some burgers and many cans of lemonade at the lodge which was amazing. Alright, that's all for now. We'll go to Silverthorne next, and then Salida!

Eric B. in Atlantic City, bad ankle and all

(Call made 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 23)

Hey, it’s Eric Bruntjen calling in from Atlantic City. Just about ready to hit the Great Basin. I tell you that Tour Divide riders have guardian angels out there, and mine is Evy at the Sawmill Lodge halfway up Union Pass.

I came in there soaked to the bone wearing everything I own, blown-up ankle, I had to sit on the front step of the lodge for 15 minutes just to work up the courage to be able to walk across the lobby.

The lodge was closed, kitchen was closed, but she hooked me up with a hotel room, I had a hot bath and she cut up some fresh fruit and made some Danishes for me. I thought I was out of the race, but the next morning I woke up and, after going over Union Pass -- which was frozen solid, just a sheet of ice up there -- I caught a tailwind out of Pinedale and made my biggest day yet. I can’t believe it, but ... Evy fixed me up.

So if there are any riders still back there going over Union Pass, stop in there and give her a thanks for me. I never even had a chance to say goodbye or give her the Web site. I told her I was gone and she was going to bring me food from town the next day, so I had to leave some cash for her and never got to say thanks. But I’m back on the road. I’m feeling great. I can’t walk, but I sure can ride. And I’m going to make it to, hopefully, Rawlins by tonight. I might have to camp in the Great Basin, but I don’t see a problem with that.

Ray Porter pulls the plug!
