Race Report: Day 13

Racer update about:

Scratches:
Since our last write-up, we’ve had reports that Brunello Godio stopped in Rawlins with some sort of heart issue. We’ve had no official call-in to confirm this, but his SPOT unit did stop tracking over a day ago. We wish him well, and a speedy recovery. Also, Martin Rendl has become a possible disqualification due to taking pavement in Wyoming with a damaged rear wheel and fork. At least he gets to ride through Yellowstone, which is a reasonable trade-off! Rick Ashton also had to take an alternate route into Lima to get food and called in to disqualify himself. This takes us down to 25 racers still in the mix from the original 42, with Bruce Giroux and Martin still riding, despite their DQ’s.

Tuesday Night:

According to lots of the call-ins, yesterday was a day without rain which seemed to pick spirits and distances up.

Matthew stopped before Hartsel at about 10pm. He camped somewhere out in the flats and started again this morning around 4am. He then spent a half hour in town this morning getting breakfast at either the taco/burrito stand or at one of my favorite dining facilities en route – the Hateful Old Bitch Café and Saloon. There’s a 7 foot tall stuffed monkey that will join you for breakfast and the owner is quite a gal! Read more »

Cricket Calls From Jackson getting some repairs

Racer update about:

Cricket Butler calling in from Jackson got off at Moran Junction and had to come in to Jackson to get some repairs.  Rear hub completely gone from all of the mud bottom bracket also, so I should be riding a Ferrari tomorrow, it should be nice.  I have to give it all to Fitzgerald Cycles, they came in after hours.  Tim worked on my bike when I got into town at 8 oclock and it is like 11 pm now, so he did an awesome.  I can't thank him enough.  SO anyway, it was a beautiful day today, no wind, no rain, no animal encounters.  It was beautiful and I thoroughly enjoyed it.  Love being in Wyoming now.  Hopefully hitting Pinedale tomorrow and I will check in then.

Hello Hello, JayP & T-Race here, we stopped in Hartsel to get a big ole fat Blue Cheese burger…couldn’t pass it up even though we seen Kurt pass us…he’s on a mission. He’s moving along pretty well, but uh, yeah, we’re planning on getting to Absolute tonight, well, that means Salida…we reserved a couple of beds at the hostel so we’re guaranteed to make it there sooner or later. Um…things are going good…had some tailwinds, had some headwind, some blue & cloudy skies…all things are good. Ah, having a good birthday. Alright, see ya.

Kurt calls from Salida!

Hey, it's Kurt! I'm in Salida. The last couple days have been kind of hard. Yesterday had some really challenging terrain in Gore Canyon. It took it's toll on both Chris and I, and Chris ended up going into Kremmling for the night last night. I pushed on and got all the way up to Ute pass around midnight and slept up there. My goal today was to get to Salida here, to the post office before they closed at five, so I pushed hard. Managed to make it from Ute pass all the way through Silverthorne and Hartsel to Salida here by about 4:00 or so. Now I'm at Absolute Bikes having some more work done on my bike - new tire, new bottom bracket, that sort of thing. Definitely this has taken it's toll on the gear, but it's holding up fairly well. Nothing catastrophic since the incident in Wyoming.  Next up is headed into the Cochetopa hills, which I'm looking forward to. Some familiar territory over there, and I really like it, so it should be fun. Alright, talk to you guys later.

John Fettis calls in from Steamboat

Racer update about:

Hi this is John Fettis, calling in from Steamboat.

Quite an eventful couple of days. Day before yesterday we set off from Pinedale at about 5am, and we had a pretty good tail wind so quick lunch stop at Atlantic City, and decided to make best use of the tail wind, kept it rolling across the basin. Didn't quite make it to Rawlins, made about 207 miles that night. Stopped just short of Rawlins, about 15 miles outside of town. Just crashed there.

However, paid the price for that. Did a bit too much of an effort there and ended up with some pretty sore legs just around the knee area. Yesterday was a bit of a wipe out and the pelaton have passed me again now. I'm just chilling out in Steamboat for a couple of hours, getting the bike fixed and getting some decent food in. Gonna roll out and hopefully get to Radium tonight, and rejoin up with the guys again there. So all good fun. Yesterday not so good - bit of a low point really. But still going alright.

Bye for now, See ya!

Hello, this is Paul.  I'm in Flagg ranch with Per, Trevor and Steve. Per's hurt his knee a bit but we've all made it here in pretty good time this morning.  Hopefully we'll get of the the top of Togwatee today.

Quick message for Thomas and Freddie - they need to call the Fat Controller because when we were riding down the railway line in Idaho yesterday the conditions were really very poor.  He really needs to sort the track out.  Oh..and Per was Percy, Trevor was James and Stephen was Henry and I was Toby.  Bye for now.
