Hello, this is Trevor Browne calling from lima, montana.  Been kinda sitting here all day we're taking a bit of a rain break and body break, I guess. It's been  pretty stormy the past couple of days.   Two days ago, we were going over the pass from Wise River to Polaris, pretty much freezing rain for the whole day. And got quite close to hypothermia a couple of times.  We were shaking so bad on our bikes, we had to pull over and dry ourselves off.  That made the trails really  slick between Bannock state road and also after Grants to Lima. Pretty much walked the bike half the way and got the mud all clogged up in the tires. Not a lot of fun.

I think today we just needed to  take a break.  Our bodies were pretty tired last night.  We couldn't really move any further.  Everybody's probably feeling the same way, across the board.  I'm here with Per and Paul and Steve. Ray was here earlier, and Cricket was here earlier today, but she left.  Everyone seems to be kinda hurting but still wanting to go on. So I think we're all going to head off.  I'm off tomorrow morning and hopefully the trail gets a little bit better.  Just as muddy but things seem to be drying out a bit. Bike's running well.  I'm  OK.

John calls in to officially drop

Racer update about:

Hi, this is John Nobile calling from Jackson Airport on Monday night. Just to make it official, I pulled out as I had planned to a few days ago, so I could save my vacation time for another race. I went as far as Turpin Meadows [Turpin Meadow Ranch] last night; we stayed there. This morning Jill headed up the pass- Togwotee Pass- and hopefully she's gonna make Pinedale tonight, but I guess we'll find out. There were some actually pretty bad headwinds, coming back into Jackson- hopefully the riders aren't dealing with that.

I think, also, I think I spotted Jeremy at the airport here, maybe, lying down, looking pretty beat- I don't want to start any rumors, but I'm pretty sure it was him. I didn't bother him- he looked like he was sleeping...

So, anyway, I hope everyone has a good race, and I'll maybe fill in some more details later about what happened on the second day that caused me to slow down.

Right, bye.

Cricket Calls in from Lima

Racer update about:

Hey, it's Cricketchecking in from Lima.  I just got in (Sunday night).  In 2 minutes I can't begin to tell you what I just experienced over Medicine Lodge Pass.  It was the most demoralizing experience of my life.  Basically from Grants to Lima it's almost unrideable and going south over the passI would say there is 13 miles that are almost unpushable.  My wheels were stuck, wouldn't turn, even walking in the sage off the road, just the mud was everywhere.  It was crazy.  It took me 7.5 hours to get to Hildredge Ranch, which is 6 miles before the pass into Lima.  7.5 hours, it was insane.  I just wanted to sit down and cry but I didn't because I needed to get into town.  Anyway, resupplying heregot the bke washed and cleaned my tires and brakes, trying to get a lube and I'm probably going to move on, I might be here tonight, it depends.  But anyway, anyone coming over that pass, just beware, it's wet, it's hell.  But I am still smiling and still laughing and I doon't know why.  Anyway, just checking in, everyone be good.  Bye.

Paul calls again from Lima

Hello, this is Paul calling in from Lima.  For those from the UK, it's "lye"-ma not "lee"-ma so there's no Paddington Bear here.

For Molly, yes I'll be home before your next wobbly tooth falls out so mummy doesn't have to deal with it; for Benjy, yes of course I'll play football but you'd better watch out as I'll be pretty good when I get back; and for Thomas and Freddie, yes those troublesome trucks were mighty troublesome [referring to the occasion on day 3 or 4 where he and his fellow cyclist had to carry their bikes over a train that was blocking the trail], I nearly had to call the Fat Controller (the ones near Corbin that is).

And for everybody else who has left me messages and e-mails, thanks very much.  It's a real source of encouragement and motivation and I'm sorry I haven't managed to reply individually as I've only had a chance to check up on things for the first time today but it's really appreciated and it does actually help as I'm riding along, or not riding along in the mud as we have been, to think that people are taking the time to watch and so once again thanks very much.

Just to recap, yesterday was ....well, you know....we covered a good distance but it was such gruelling work coming over the pass into Lima...the mud was really atrocious.  You just had to push your bike and then the wheels would lock up and then you couldn't even push it so you had to clean it and then you had to go on again etc...repeat several dozen times over the top...and then a descent that was almost as hard work as going up the other side....oh, and a bit of Scottish weather thrown in - maybe 40 degrees and lashing rain for a good couple of hours on the descent just to sweeten it up.  Read more »

Eric B. dealing with sprained ankle

(Call came in 6:24 a.m. Monday, June 22)

Hey, Eric Bruntjen calling from Union Pass at the Sawmill Lodge. Got into quite a bit of trouble yesterday on that Forest Road 515, hike-a-bike. Sprained my ankle really bad and had to stop here last night. I was pretty sure last night that I wasn’t going to be able to go any further, but this morning I’m in my biking clothes, getting ready to head out. I’m in a lot of pain, don’t really know what the future holds. It’s really frustrating to injure yourself walking in a bike race, but that road was awful. Just sticky mud. You couldn’t even push your bike through it; I had to carry mine. I know a lot of guys took the road, which is the official route; I know some guys actually went around it, too. That just makes it even worse; they took the highway. Like I said, not sure what’s going on. Try and make it as far as I can today.
