John Fettis calls from Lava Lodge, WY

Hi this is John Fettis, calling in from Lava Mountain Lodge.

We had a bit of a rough day today with some mud over the Togwotee pass, and then snow and mud again after some heavy rainfall on the Brooks Lake road.

So we're having a cabin here at Lava Mountain Lodge and then we're heading out to Pinedale tomorrow. So it's been kind of office hours cycling so far, but hopefully we'll be getting some more hours in on the days to come.

Bye for now.

Paul calls from Elkhorn Hot Springs

Racer update about:

Hello everybody.  this is Paul Howard calling in from Elkhorn Hot Springs.  I'm here with Steve McGuire.  We got here after a very long and very wet day today.  We came in from Butte.  My, we had a lot of rain.  But good you know, a good distance covered but it's taken it's toll, sapped our energy a bit I guess.  But we've found some good food and good accommodation here so that will help.  Overnight, we'll decide whether it would be wise weather-wise to be pushing on tomorrow or maybe sort of holding up until maybe conditions improve.

We didn't encounter really tough trail conditions if people are interested in that.  It's just the weather that made it rough.  The first bit out of Butte, the first crossing of the continental divide was, well, the trail conditions were kind of slippery - not thick mud but enough to make you lose traction every now and then so it was a bit wearing.

And then Fleecer Ridge was okay - you could probably ride up the North side in normal conditions but there's no hope of doing that because it's all too wet.  Coming down the other side was okay and then nothing particularly demanding after that.  Obviously it's pavement coming into Elkhorn here so that's been okay.  It's just the weather conditions that have taken their toll .  Hope everyone is alright.  But you know we're still alive and we're still singing!

Hi, this is Jill Homer calling from Sawtell Mountain Resort in Idaho.  We had a tough day today.  We left Lima under dark skies and light showers and it turned into heavy showers.  It turned the road into all kinds of muck and wet cement -- just stuff that was not really even rideable and places I had to drag my bike through some of it and it got all gooped up and couldn't get all of the mud off and pretty much lost both my derallieurs.  So, I ended up walking and single speeding a lot of the day.  I tried to chip it off, but, it was slow.  And I got caught in one storm, came right up from behind me, and thunder cracked down -- or lightning -- and the thunder was instantaneous.  It was an amazingly loud noise.  It felt like it couldn't have been more than a few feet away.  So...anyway...that... it was, it's been tough.  I made it to Sawtell and I picked up a copy of The Post Register which is a newspaper where I used to work.  Makes me feel close to home even though I sometimes feel like I'm in the middle of nowhere, pushing my bike through the mud for...not a real good reason.  But, it's been fun and hopefully the weather improves.  It's supposed to be another, at least another, day of this, maybe more... but... keep going.  Talk to you later, bye.

Kurt calls from Pinedale

Hey - Kurt here in Pinedale! Bike held together with my massive number of two gears, pushing 12 miles an hour in the wind and rain the whole way down the highway from the Place Cafe. Dale here at the hardware store set me up with a new derailleur pulley and a new chain, and things look beautiful. Chris and I are going to go stock up on groceries, and then on into the evening, it looks like the rain has moved on and maybe we'll dry out a little bit, we'll see - I'm tired of being wet at this point, but I don't think there's anything that can be done about that. Alright, until next time!

Hey, this is Rick calling in from the Tour Divide.  I'm calling from Helena.  Left a little bit late this morning from Lincoln and actually my knee feels a lot better!  I think the help I got from over the phone from Dr. John Dunn, Tallahassee, he gave me some tips on to relieve the pain and also I put a fresh kinesio tape on my knee and that seemed to work real well.  I was able to stand up and pedal today, so, my ass was not near as sore after today's ride.  It rained on today's final two passes today.  It rained all the way into Helena.  Jeff caught up with me on the second pass and we kind of rode in together.  So, it was another wet day.  But my spirits are good because I'm able to pedal normally now.  So, it was a good day for me.  Hopefully well have some clearer weather tomorrow.  But I want to thank everybody that has sent in replies to the blog that certainly helps my spirits that people are watching and giving me support.  I'll call in again later.
