I wanted to call in to thank Bob Morgan from Albuquerque. He is he man. He brought me his own personal 26” rear wheel yesterday evening. He drove all the way from Albuquerque to Abiquiu and brought me his wheel. So I have his 26” wheel now in the rear. It made it very very well over these last few hills we had to do this morning. Thank you very much Bob. This is so very, very good. Thank you. We just had some food, Alan and me and we are stocking up on supplies and we’ll be on our way towards Grants in the next half-hour or something. We did sort of lose Adrian and Leighton on the climbs. We started out together this morning. We sort of lost them. But I think we’ll meet again on the way. That is what I hope for that we will see them again. All you people out there be good, be safe. Dominik Scherer needs a Rear Wheel - If you can help, call him in Abiquiu

Racer update about:
Hello this is Dominik Scherer again calling from Abiquiu, NM. I just found out that my rear wheel is decapitated. The rim is cracked pretty badly. I’m in dire need of a rear wheel. The problem is I tried to call all of the bike shops in the area. There was just one which number was OK. They didn’t have anything in Santa Fe. If anyone on the route, has something for me, feel free to reach me here in Abiquiu in the Abiquiu Inn, the 505-685-4378. Otherwise, I’m just trying to ride tomorrow morning over the hills. Just hope that the rim that holds up. Just hoping that the bike holds up because the body feels good and the mind is set for the Mexican Border. So let’s hope that the wheel holds up. I’m trying to be light on my rear wheel to not give it too much stress. Hope that God will help and the whole things going to hold up. That is the situation on my bike. I just wanted to let you people know. You guys out there be safe. Message back home: (rest of message in german) (recorder time: 2008-07-02 18:21:58 EST)

"One of the most grueling bike races on the planet"

Recently, there has been a lot of coverage beyond our blog on the race. Here is an update: Yesterday, the Steamboard Pilot & Today ran an article about the Tour Divide and featured three of our racers, Leighton White, Dominik Scherer, and Alan Goldsmith. Also, over the past few days, MTBR user MarkInTheBoat has posted trail pictures of Matt Lee and Reuben Klein and Alan Goldsmith and Dominik Scherer. Former racer leader Reuben Klein has also sent in some photos of his ankles and knees, as he indicated he would in his final call-in. Reuben mentioned that he believes he messed up his ankle while hiking through the snow, making his attempt the second victim of the deep snows.
