Hey, it’s Justin. I’m not sure what my SPOT is telling you but I am in Jackson still. I made the decision yesterday afternoon that I don’t want to keep doing the route at the pace I’m going. I’ve learned that after a week of going about 125 miles a day is just not the way I want to do it. Y’know, I’ve been really into the Great Divide for so long and I feel like I’m not enjoying it. I’m missing opportunities. I’m missing seeing great places along the way. I’ve passed up opportunities to see people and good friends just in the first week alone and I have more regrets over all the things I’ve passed up more than regretting stopping this pace in the race. I mean the Divide is something I definitely want to finish and plan to finish, but it’s not going to be in race form. That’s what I’ve learned so far. So, I am in Jackson, taking it in: The Tetons, Yellowstone, some friends. I’m going to continue doing some riding of course, but like I said, it’s not in race form for me. I learned that in the first week, and even when I first got into Whitefish and saw Kathie Love along the way and could only see her for a few minutes, it was very emotional and I felt like I was just not doing the route and taking the trip as I want to, so it’s no longer a race for me. I’ll be covering what I can before I have to go back to work, and then I’ll come back out here again and finish the route, but I’m done racing. Best of luck to everyone else out there. And thanks again. Bye.

Justin calls in from Idaho

Hey, it’s Justin. It is Saturday morning, cruising through the end of Idaho into Wyoming. Overlooking the Tetons. Had a decent night’s sleep. Pitched a tent last night and slept out in the woods. Um, body’s actually dealing with my knees and Achilles a little bit better, but after over 1,000 miles and the first week here, what I’m learning is that I’m not really having fun riding at this pace. And the reality is, I know this is over a year’s worth of vacation time, so I want to make sure I’m enjoying myself, and having to ride this fast is not enjoyable. Y’know, I want to be able to stop and smell the flowers, instead of looking at them, pissing on them and keep riding. So, I want to make sure I’m making the most of my time out here and we’ll see what happens. I’m getting close to Flagg Ranch and I’ll either keep going on the route or maybe spin in Yellowstone and check out some geysers and enjoy myself a little more. But, we’ll see. I just want to have fun. That’s what it’s all about for me, so we’ll see what it takes to make that happen. So, keep an eye on the SPOT, I’ll let you know where I go. See ya.

Justin calls from Lima again

Hey, it’s Justin. It’s 9 a.m. Friday, unfortunately, I am still in Lima. Um, had some bike issues this morning. My seat post collar is stripped out and I couldn’t put any weight on the seat. The town is super small and I couldn’t get it at the hardware store or anything like that, but stumbled upon somebody’s garage and after they got done fixing a quad, it seems like he should be able to get me rolling. Tap out the thread. So, I’m going to be out of here shortly. Um, I’m pretty sore from the 150 yesterday, and very late start today and it looks like it’s going to be super hot so it will be a low mileage day but hopefully make it to the next food and water and keep going. Over and out. Bye.

Hey, it’s Justin. I’m in Lima. Pretty tired after almost, I guess 150 miles today. Stayed up on Fleecer Ridge last night, so it was pretty cold. About 7,000 feet. So, I didn’t get much sleep and then long day today. Um, we’ll see what happens tomorrow. See if I can stick with Steve and josh—they’re a bit faster, so I might drop back, but we’ll see what happens. Bye .

Hey, it's Justin calling in from Helena. Um, it is...what day is it? I'm not sure, but I guess it's Day 5 at night. Last called in Columbia Falls. I was hoping to get a good night's sleep that night--didn't work out. I was trying to wean off of the 1,800 milligrams of Ibuprofen that I have to take every day. But that didn't work out too well--took less pills and I was up all night. So, I didn't sleep well. That next day, I had two big passes. First one we came across a bear cub. Luckily no mom was around. Second one: Richmond Peak was pretty much a nightmare. A big storm had just rolled in. So, super tacky, muddy. Part of it was like this barely-used snowmobile doubletrack/singletrack that was super slow and there were so many mosquitoes it looked like it was raining and you were going so slow. And then hike-a-bike through a mile or so of snow at the top. So, tough day, but made it to Seeley Lake last night five minutes after most things closed in town but they made us a sandwich at the bar. And then did 125 or 130 today and I'm in Helena now. So, hopefully try and go to Wise River tomorrow.

Hey, it's Justin Kline.I got cut off last time, but anyway, we are in Columbia Falls. It’s me Josh, and Steve. Yesterday was pretty rough, we did about a hundred and fifty from Elkford to just past the border. The new Canadian section had a ton of climbing, real long day. We got over the border pretty late. I think the border guard thought I was smuggling a softball in my spandex, but I made it through. Steve had a little trouble of course, being from out of the country, but we ended up getting through. Dinner at the First Chance Last Chance. Nice little frozen pizza at about 12:30. Ray on the single speed rolled in and we ended up sleeping next to the bar which we found out in the morning was a pet relief station , but it worked out. Pretty easy day today. We did about a hundred and ten to Columbia Falls, trying to recover from yesterday and the four hours of sleep we got. So, we’re getting a good night’s sleep tonight and we’ll push on in the morning. Talk to you later. Bye.
