Hey Tour Divide followers this is Chris Plesko here in Lima…like the bean not LEEEMMAA. uhh I was gonna leave a Matt Lee style message but we’re just having too much fun out here to keep it that short. Getting into Lima was epic... be prepared …mud [bike] on your back hiking... umm ya! I have to give a shout out to my Grand Loop 2009 friends. Your pictures were inspiring me out there, so I'm just gonna get some food.  Just had a major stock up at the gas station and uhh then we’re gonna push on and get the heck outa’ Montana for the first time. It’s been a big state!  Alright that’s all. Later!

Hey Kurt here uhh Chris and I just rolled into Lima. It’s noon on Thursday….day seven so ya Thursday, it’s been a rather epic last 24 hrs or so … with a great ride over the passes outside of Button just gorgeous up there . Life is good then Chris and Joe and I got split up a little bit didn’t know where each other were I think mother nature told us it wasn’t time to split up and just slammed us with a storm…we actually regrouped but the uhh road over Banik was horrible and things got worse from there. We ended up staying at a ranch up most of the way up Banik pass and pushed through the mud floor for most of this morning. Joe’s bike is broken now so he has not yet arrived but Chris and I are gonna push on after getting a good meal and cleaning our bikes up here so for Chris and I at least things are looking up and we’re looking forward to crossing the Idaho border later today. Alright cool talk to ya guys later!

(Call received 5:15 a.m. Thursday, June 18)

Yeah, hi, it’s Eric Bruntjen calling in from Butte, Montana. I’ve been having some pretty good days. Leaving Whitefish, I went over a couple of passes, ended up going through some beautiful country, pretty green, lots of mosquitos. My hat’s off to Christian at the Holland Lake Lodge, it’s a beautiful lodge building with cabins around it on this nice lake. He opened his kitchen for us and I had a heaping mound of fish-and-chips and two beers in front of a roaring fireplace while it drizzled outside. Jeremy and I got a little cabin, it was pretty nice, a really unexpected treat on the Tour Divide.

Coming into Butte yesterday, I chased two things all day: a thunderstorm and two tire tracks, and I caught both of them in Basin, Montana. The thunderstorm was ahead of me all day long; I didn’t really get rained on until Basin, but everywhere I went was just mud and puddles. There’s a lot of tracks on the route right now; you can really see that some guys are heading straight for Mexico, they cut all the corners. Other riders, they’re going to Mexico too, but they go over to this side of the road first and then they go over to that side of the road and then maybe back to the other side.

There were two tracks, however, that were fresh. I chased those guys down and caught up to them in Basin. It was the Italians. I caught the Italians in Basin. I beat them out of town; they were having pizza and beer. I made it over the pass into Butte. Read more »

Hey this is Cricket Butler signing in from Butte I just pulled in about 10:30 this morning. Had a great ride from Lincoln to Helena yesterday, I had to stop in Helena for about 4 hrs unfortunately getting some work on my bike my seat post had cracked and some ummm brake pads that kind of stuff and then I left Helena much later than I anticipated and uhh had to do Lava Mountain in the dark, almost…very bad and on the way down into Basin I had a bear encounter. Giant bear coming around the corner…ya know startled him..had to stay there for a little bit probably for about an hour he was in the road, he wouldn’t move. He actually charged me at one point umm I had my bear banger in one hand just yelling and my bike between me and him and just praying to God he wasn’t gonna do anything. But when it got dark and I couldn’t see him anymore umm it was a little frightening so..but I did make it into Basin just very late and umm I’m in Butte now. I’m gonna head outa here in a couple hours I’m just gonna eat and get some new food and rest for a few hours. Alright! Hope everyone is doing well. Talk to ya soon. Bye.

Hi this is Jeff Kerby uhh this is my first call in, I just arrived in Helena, Montana last night. Canada was cold and it was wet and it was beautiful, but weather was absolutely miserable. Uhh spent the first night I think it was Elkton uhh whatever the town was 109 miles in umm under a bridge talking to a I guess a homeless drunk guy….it was an interesting conversation, ended up trying to fall asleep but I was afraid he was gonna knife me. Then uhh I think it was two nights after that, everything I had was wet..I was freezing in this tent uhh I was getting frost bite. First thing as soon as I got onto the bike I saw a bear, he raised up at me, I didn’t know what to do so I just went at him…he ran away so that was good. Umm simple pass and that mud wall were particularly awful. Im gonna get my bike worked on now and hopefully get outa town, but today’s gonna be kind of low mileage so anyway do the best I can so take care and bye!

Heyyy there, this is Mathew Lee calling from Lima, Montana it’s Thursday morning about 4:50. I rolled in last night around 8:00, waited to call till this morning because it was awfully hard to say anything positive about these last 24 hours beginning with Lisa Ridge ending with Sheep Creek Divide. I’ve been pretty blasted with storms and hiking through this sage brush umm it’s been pretty hectic. But, we’ve gotta be happy for the farmers I guess. Anyway I’m heading out this morning into the Sentential valley which apparently was closed within the past five days due to flooding on the road. It’s now open again but uhh I happen to know there’s several impassible sections when it’s wet so I don’t know what to expect, we’ll see. Anyway big springs a bust okay take care!

Jill calls in from Butte around midnight.

Hii this is Jill Homer I’m calling from Butte, Montana. It is Wednesday night I believe. We’ve just got in after a pretty long day, a good day. We did about six passes and closer to 20, but it was actually a lot fun coming down I-15 into Butte at night, with all the lights after spending all day in the woods. Kind of a cool experience, it shows that you get all kinds of experience on the Divide. It’s not just bears trees. And John’s still with me, we’re planning on heading out tomorrow so..talk to ya later. Bye.

No pain in the legs, everything feels pretty good. Looking forward to goin to Basin tomorrow. Every once in a while I run into somebody uhh it was fun up on Richmond Peak yesterday afternoon..otherwise it’s goin well. Thanks.

Paul calls in from Ovando

Hello!!! uhh Paul Howard checking in here from Ovando still in Montana just uhh an explanation of my short day yesterday, set off from Whitefish and only got as far as Swan lake which was just over about 60 miles. Uhh probably from not eating enough these past few days because of a dicky tummy. And even though I ate nicely and well yesterday in the morning and at lunchtime I kind of ran out of energy by the afternoon. I was also a bit fed up of getting into places late and then setting off late. I'm gonna try to catch up on sleep and have had a short day. Trying to get into a different routine of setting off early which has worked so far cus I’ve now made it another 100 miles from Swan lake through to Ovando and that was nice, tough going over Richmond peak and frankly it’s nice to get out of all those trees. Two other quick things, update on physical ailments - not to bad, slightly soar knees, bit of saddlesore gotta tell my youngest Thomas and Freddie to get on with that potty training as I'll need that nappy cream! Seeing as though there are no other Tour Divide riders around if anybody wants to come ride with me tomorrow im off on route to Helena and then the next day probably to Butte so if you can find the route out everyone knows me in the green Mr Cycles top. All subjects of conversation considered... Leeds United football (that's soccer to the Americans), Montana trees, more Montana trees anything else?…that’s it talk to ya soon bye!
