Hey, uhh, everybody!  This is Chris Plesko.  9:20 in Sparwood.  I'm with, uhh, Matt, Matt, and Joe Meiser.  Uhh, had a great day.  Flyin' out here.  Umm the conditions were really good and having a lot of fun.  So, uhh, I'm sure they'll call in sometime tonight too but I, uhh, guess I probably get the first check in.  Yeah, umm, that's about it. Looking forward to tomorrow.  The new section should be really pretty and a little bit of a challenge since we don't know what's out there.  That's about all.  Talk to you from Eureka or beyond.

Hi, this is Rick calling on the TD. I'm now in Sparwood. Started out yesterday, feeling good. Uh, made it to Bolten Creek, and it started raining. So, I didn't want to try to get up over Elk Pass, and get caught up in a big storm up there.  I heard there was a lot of lightening up there that night.  So, I decided to spend the night there in Bolten Creek.  Stayed with Paul, Cadet, Bruce, and Martin and Jeff.  We all stayed at a campground just down from Bolten Creek.  Put our tents up in the rain, so it was raining.  Everything was wet.  Got up this morning early, went over the Pass, and had lunch in Elford, and we're staying in Sparwood.   We should get on the road early tomorrow to try to make it through the wilderness section, that detour, and make it to Eureka tomorrow.  So far, everything is doing pretty good.  The bike's holding up well.  My body's holding up.  I want to thank Craig Thompson from Tallahassee Chinese Medicine that got me to the starting line of this race.  Everything is doing fine right now.  So, we'll try to call in again tomorrow.

Hello, this is Jay, and this is Tray…Petervary. (Jay) Obviously we made it to the Banff start, and uh, the last couple of days have been pretty good…we’ve seen a bear today with a couple of cubs which was pretty nice…with a little standoff situation, uh, and the riding’s been good…little on and off, little wet, but we’re in really good spirits. Tracey and I are doing great, and um, yeah, we’re going to be pushing on through the night here for a little while…and uh, I guess that’s all I have to say for right now, alright thanks. (Tracey) Hey, its been pretty wicked out there, good times fer sure. Lovin’ my new bike and, uh, yeah, we’re getting it all dialed in. Um, we'll talk to you later, see ya. -DB

Race Report: Days 1 and 2

Racer update about:

It has been nearly 40 hours since the beginning of the race and the race leaders are already pushing a record-breaking pace.  While we are still awaiting to hear our first call-ins, the SPOT narrative has been telling us an interesting story.  As the racers approached Elkford (mile 109), they were mostly sticking close together, although Matthew Lee (Sobe/Cannondale) appeared to maintain the lead almost the entire time.  Matt also decided to put in some night miles as he pushed into the new route addition in the Flathead Valley.  As many of the other race leaders, such as Kurt Refsnider (AZT 300 record holder) and and John Nobile (current border-to-border record holder) decided to sleepin Sparwood (mile 140), Matt pushed to Corbin.

This morning and afternoon, many racers pushed into and through the Flathead addition.  Unfortunately, Brunello Godio missed the turn toward Cabin Pass and lost a few hours as he approached the now-closed border crossing at North Fork Rd. Read more »

John crossed the border!

Hi, this is John Nobile checking in from Eureka.  First day went well, I got to Sparwood at about 10 and then I got a super early start this morning.  But it was cold and there was a lot of water on the trial on fording road - I had to walk through a couple of feet of water (I'm sure everyone reported that).  A lot of rain on and off, thunderstorms - got super super wet. My bike comp acturally stopped working (it got too wet I guess). Anyways, that was a brutal brutal day. I crossed the border at about 5 and I am just gonna take it easy tonight. I'm actually gonna ride up to the border tomorrow morning to corss agan to sort of start my border to border race from there (guess that's sort of a searate categeory. Anyway, I'll be checking in, hopefully, in the enxt day or two...

Hey, it's Kurt Refsnider, calling in from Eureka. We just crossed the border - I don't know - 10 miles ago or something like that. Spent most of the day riding with Chris Plesko and Matt Thourot and, uh, some of the time with Jay and Tracy on the tandem and Joe from Minnesota. Umm, but we split up a little bit, there were a couple of sliced sidewalls today, and all around just a pretty hard and challenging section through the new part in Canada, but it was pretty nice. Saw a couple bears, and saw a couple wolves yesterday. So, it's been pretty entertaining. Um, but, feeling good, and Chris and I are heading off toward the Whitefish Divide tonight, and are gonna probably camp up there somewhere, and try to hit through that and ride Meadow Pass in the morning. So hopefully things continue to go well. Alright, later.

Hi. This is Kevin Hall calling in from Sparwood. Calling to let everybody know, things are going well. There’s some great scenery out there. Saw some rams, grizzlies, couple frogs, lot of birds, lot of elk. Stayed over at Thumbery Canyon?? cabin last night and I’m going to take on the new section here in just a little bit. Just wanted to wish everyone back home… I hope everybody’s been able to follow me online. The scenery is just great. As I came into the cabin last night there was a huge rainbow right over the cabin. Just some beautiful scenery. I’m holding up pretty well. The bike’s holding up pretty well…making a few funny sounds. My back rack busted a screw. I’ve had to use some zip ties to try to keep that intact. Hopefully it will stay intact until I get to Whitefish and take care of that. But, anyway, that’s about all the news I have to go. I’ve tried to pull up the internet here at the Sparwood library try to see the Leaderboard, but their internet is down right here at the time. This is Kevin Hall signing off. It’s about 2:36 mountain time in from Sparwood, Canada. Good luck to all the racers. Hello to my family. Love you all very much. I’ll try to give you a call tomorrow once I cross the border. Thank you.
